Ants are social insects. Their nests or colonies can be found indoors and out, although some species have preferred nesting sites. A nest contains one or more queens ants laying eggs and being cared for by worker ants. Worker ants are sterile or non-reproductive female ants that tend the queen and brood (eggs, larvae and pupae) and forage and for food. Often, foraging ants can invade households from colonies outside.
Entry*
Ants can enter through the tiniest cracks , seeking water and food substances and nesting places.
Scent trails*
Ants leave an invisible pheromone trail which other ants will follow once they locate the food source to collect for their nest.
Nest locations*
They can nest about anywhere in your garden ,roof ,in and around your house.
Colony size*
Colonies can number up to 300,000 to 500,000 .
Colony Lifetime*
A colony can live a relatively long lifetime . Worker ants may live seven years to server their queen, and the queen may live as long as 15 years.
Do-it-yourself ineffectiveness*
Most do-it-yourself ant control approaches kill only the ants you see nearby
Treating ants can be a difficult task , but there are things you should know about how a ants’ behavior can lead to unnecessary and unwanted concerns for you and your home.
Ant Life Cycle
The ant life cycle has four distinct life stages: egg, larvae, pupae and adult.
Eggs
A fertile queen begins laying her eggs. Ant eggs are really small – only about a half of a millimeter in diameter. The eggs are also oval, white and transparent.
Larvae
After about 1 to 2 weeks in the egging stage, a grub-like, legless ant larvae hatches .
Pupae
After the larvae molts and sheds their skin they change into the pupae stage. Pupae appear like adults except that their legs and antennae are folded and pressed against the pupal body.
Adult
At the time of emergence, the adult ant is fully grown by now, but darkens in their color as it ages. Adult ants are one of three different colony castes the queens, workers or males.
Ant problems occur in homes an structures primarily because of food, water and also favorable nesting sites are available in there. Eliminate alternate food sources, and sources of moisture.
